Not a single trade from Image, which is probably for the best seeing as I still have Revival volume 4 and Prophet volume 1 to read. I think I'll get another Marvel trade after enjoying Magneto so much last week

Marvel are definitely the busiest publishers for this week and they have some great books out as well. I'll be picking up ASM volume 1. It has been a few years since I was able to add the latest Amazing Spider-Man trade to the shelf. Collects #1-6. Another book worth starting from volume 1 is Mark Waid and Chris Samnee's second run on Daredevil, some of us have to get a move on and finish off the last run first though. This is my first round up of new trades out since last November so I really appreciate it if anyone bothered coming over to check it out. I promise to be more reliable from now on.

Up first is the great big God Is Dead Book Of Acts Deluxe Collector Box Set from Avatar which will retail at $100 but I am assured contains content far exceeding the value. There's at least half a cow in leather alone! I've not read the title since Hickman left but it's fucking insane and theyve got Alan Moore & Si Spurrier writing it *Take My Money* Oh yeah, they are limited to only 500 releases but when have you not known a Moore comic to be reprinted/packaged/branded annually, so don't go stabbing anyone over one. Included in the collection:

I was pretty severe on DC's big event collection so it's only fair I mention that picking up this complete $50 Infinity collection is probably the only way to make sense of the fucking thing. If you're in the UK you could save a fortune and pick up the two Panini reprints instead. If you bought the Avengers tie ins separately I feel bad for you son. There's some breathtaking art, in fact this book is almost a showcase of Marvel's finest talent. The 592 pages collect:

Todays New Trades 03/10/13

Not much out this week but there's still loads to talk about. DC release The Court of Owls arc, the first 7 issues of the New 52 Batman and includes a white PVC owl mask. Pretty sweet deal for £15.

Also at DC, JLA Earth 2 from superstar Scottish creators Morrison and Quitely gets a new deluxe hardcover featuring a new cover by Frank Quitely, plus previously unpublished sketch material and more.

The first volume of Image's Non Human is out, a bit pricier than Image's usual v.1's, especially for 4 issues but I'm led to believe the sketchbook and bonus material is going to be excellent. The second Skullkickers omnibus Collecting SKULLKICKERS #12-23, including the five 'unbooted' issues Uncanny, Savage, Mighty, All-New Secret and Dark Skullkickers Dark. (still giggling at these.)                
Marvel's march in to the OGN market continues with Avengers: Endless Wartime by Warren Ellis and Thor Season One. The season one books are really well packaged in my opinion but never worth the price to established readers, I wouldn't even recommend a new ready pays £20 for a slim HC.

I will finish off with two great Omnibus from Marvel. Firstly a book which I constantly recommend, Hickman's Fantastic Four, gets it's first oversized collection. Right now you can get it all 800 pages on Amazon for £35 (RRP £75) if you have been putting off reading this title for some insane reason, you're never going to get a better chance than this to pick it up cheap.  Collecting: Dark Reign: Fantastic Four 1-5, Dark Reign: The Cabal, Fantastic Four 570-588, FF 1-5

The second omnibus I wanted to mention is the oversized Halo HC, I've read some of the books including and personally loved Van Lente's stuff. Collecting: Halo: Uprising 1-4, Blood Line 1-5, Helljumper 1-5. Depending on where you buy from it might still work out cheaper to buy the 3 individual trades so be sure to check them out first.

Superman and the Legion of Super-Heroes HC.

By Geoff Johns, Gary Frank & Jon Sibal. 168 pages, collecting Action Comics #858-863.

I’m usually not a big Superman reader but as I read some old Legion of Super-Heroes comics when I was a kid I bought this hardcover to see what a modern take on them would be like. It did not disappoint.

 The plot has Superman travelling to the 31st Century to help out his old friends, The Legion of Super-Heroes. When he arrives he realizes the future has changed and Earth is now a dangerous place where the twisted symbol of Superman himself is used to condone xenophobic behavior that threatens to put Earth at war with the rest of the universe.

The story talks about the danger of rewriting history to suit your agenda, and the importance of friendship. How characters react differently to rejection and loneliness plays a big part. Most of all, the tale illustrates the ideals Superman fights for and shows, rather than tells us, why he is THE hero.

Geoff Johns does what he does best, reintroducing old concepts and makes them accessible for all in an entertaining way. Here he takes certain silly elements of comics that are ultimately from the 60s and makes them interesting. There have been many (confusing) versions of the Legion over the years and I’m no expert but that doesn’t matter when you read this. It’s all laid out in an easy way to read and establishes characters while hinting at things for older readers. Superman is represented in his truest form. Even when he’s seemingly powerless, he stands up for those in need. It’s not his powers that make him a hero, it’s his morals and conviction.

Gary Frank’s art is mostly good as is the inking of Jon Sibal. Superman looks like Christopher Reeve which adds a sense of nobility and heart to the story. Frank has however a problem with faces. A lot of the time the characters have crazy facial expressions, and often scary eyes. This can be disturbing at first glance but when reading the whole thing you get used to it. A special shout-out to the colorists as there are a lot of bizarre colors represented in the cast of the Legion and Dave McCaig and Hi-Fi do a good job.

 The HC has an introduction by Keith Giffen and two pages of character designs in the back.

It’s a good collection and in my opinion well worth getting either as a hardcover or trade paperback.
