Todays New Trades 03/10/13

Not much out this week but there's still loads to talk about. DC release The Court of Owls arc, the first 7 issues of the New 52 Batman and includes a white PVC owl mask. Pretty sweet deal for £15.

Also at DC, JLA Earth 2 from superstar Scottish creators Morrison and Quitely gets a new deluxe hardcover featuring a new cover by Frank Quitely, plus previously unpublished sketch material and more.

The first volume of Image's Non Human is out, a bit pricier than Image's usual v.1's, especially for 4 issues but I'm led to believe the sketchbook and bonus material is going to be excellent. The second Skullkickers omnibus Collecting SKULLKICKERS #12-23, including the five 'unbooted' issues Uncanny, Savage, Mighty, All-New Secret and Dark Skullkickers Dark. (still giggling at these.)                
Marvel's march in to the OGN market continues with Avengers: Endless Wartime by Warren Ellis and Thor Season One. The season one books are really well packaged in my opinion but never worth the price to established readers, I wouldn't even recommend a new ready pays £20 for a slim HC.

I will finish off with two great Omnibus from Marvel. Firstly a book which I constantly recommend, Hickman's Fantastic Four, gets it's first oversized collection. Right now you can get it all 800 pages on Amazon for £35 (RRP £75) if you have been putting off reading this title for some insane reason, you're never going to get a better chance than this to pick it up cheap.  Collecting: Dark Reign: Fantastic Four 1-5, Dark Reign: The Cabal, Fantastic Four 570-588, FF 1-5

The second omnibus I wanted to mention is the oversized Halo HC, I've read some of the books including and personally loved Van Lente's stuff. Collecting: Halo: Uprising 1-4, Blood Line 1-5, Helljumper 1-5. Depending on where you buy from it might still work out cheaper to buy the 3 individual trades so be sure to check them out first.

Over at DC follow SHAZAM'S new 52 reintroduction with the SHAZAM! HC collecting: JUSTICE LEAGUE #7-11, 0, 14-16 and 18-21. Who doesn't love shouting SHAZAM! There is also the second volume of Vertigo's Preacher TPB reprintings, collecting: PREACHER #13-26, it's a really affordable way to read a book you should have already read, I recommend volume 1 first though.

You can collect the whole Ultimate Marvel "Divided We Stand" event with the new TPB by the same name. Why would you not want a book written by Bendis, Hickman and Humphries? Collecting: ULTIMATE COMICS X-MEN #13-18, ULTIMATE COMICS ULTIMATES #13-18 and ULTIMATE COMICS SPIDER-MAN (2011) #13-18. There's also some Spider-Man 2099 action, building on the recent buzz. The X-Babies vs Avengers Babies is a good place to collect all the Skottie Young baby variants.

Events. HC vs TPB

 

September will see Marvel release their Age of Ultron Hardcover, an oversized collection featuring the main event and all relevant tie ins. They did a similar thing with the beautiful AvX hardcover and it's companion.

It's a great way to save money and read an event together instead of waiting for various trades being released separately and the presentation is top class. They also come with a digital code, adding years to the books life and saves the hassle of lugging one of these monsters on to the train with you every morning. However I'm also a fan of a whole line rebranding on paperbacks, events like House of M and Civil War look amazing on a shelf when collected together. So I thought I'd put the question out to you fellow collectors.

One larger, cheaper hardcover collecting the whole event?

Hawkeye Volume 2 and some other comics or something. It should be noted that Vol 1 of FF from Marvel contains issues #4-8 as the first 3 issues are collected in Fantastic Four volume 1. That's not confusing at all.


DC have the pricey but gorgeous Blackest Night, Absolute Edition. This Slipcased, 576 page hardcover collects:

Marvels Oversized Hardcovers

 

 

 

Outwith collecting hardcovers and paperback, another way to collect your favourite Marvel ongoing series is with their over sized HC's. Usually a year after the paperbacks and containing 2-4 story arcs these books are often very affordable compared to the equivalent number of paperbacks. For myself this means I can concentrate my money on other runs that are less likely to be collected in this format.

 

They are a pleasure to read, The larger pages beautifully display the artwork inside, (although in the case of the Matt Fraction, Uncanny X-Men OHC's, this also means more of Greg Lands art.) Well put together and bound they sit open perfectly on your lap and there's no gutter loss.

Trades made right: Locke & Key

An absolute masterclass in presentation, IDW's Locke and Key hardcovers are easily one of my favourite books on the shelf. Beautifully bound and stitched with colour coordinated book mark, other publishers should take note that IDW can release these HC's at the same price as their standard dust jacket efforts.

When I first picked up volume 1 I went online to see if I had chosen a limited edition version but no, IDW are just taking the rare move of giving you a collection that feels like value for your hard earned pennies.

The artwork in the inside covers by Gabriel Rodriguez is just another example of getting a high end product for a standard price. The book is laid out perfectly to display his incredible art in the series. With no gutter loss and beautifully placed splash pages that never hinder your enjoyment of the book.

If it suits your collection to purchase paperbacks instead then don't feel hard done to as the paperbacks are, yet again, far superior to their equivalents from other publishers. Quality, sturdy paper wrapped in embossed and glossed cover, you don't get much better than this for $20!

Synopsis/Review:

 After a family tragedy we follow the Locke family as they move across the United States to the (something clearly isn’t right here) town of Lovecraft and the childhood home of the father, “the Key house.” 

Joe Hill introduces us to the family, who are dysfunctional but ultimately really caring about each other. Straight away you are really rooting for the Locke’s and find yourself engrossed in their history and present affairs. 

In volume one we see the youngest Locke child start to unravel the old family homes secrets, a family coming together through grief, trouble follow them from their old lives and a tonne of seriously spooky shit. I don’t want to give to much away. 

Now the art. I’m flicking through the book as I write this and Gabriel Rodriguez’s art is spectacular, every panel could be cover art. With bold lines and an ultra realistic style perfectly captures the creepiness of Joe Hill’s story. The town of Lovecraft in particular looks incredible. I can only begin to imagine how much time Gabriel spent imagining and designing the place. Also another great thing about the art is the characters facial expressions, considering how much time these people spend confused/scared/baffled/terrified/all of the above Gabriel nails it every time. 

If you have to read one comic from the horror genre, make sure this is it!
