New Trades Out 01/10/2014

It's a struggle to not just jump ahead to how much awesome is out from Image this week but I am honor bound by the ancient code of the alphabet to bring this weeks new trades as follows...

The only licensed comic worth a damn, The Mathematical Edition of the Adventure Time comics is a deluxe hardcover of original material. This volume features writing from Ryan North of dinosaurcomics.com fame and is totally um.... MATHEMATICAL!

So for the price of Marvel's latest Iron Man HC (and change for two singles) you could pick up the latest Image first volumes from the guys that brought you books like Ghosted and Scalped. The blurb for Nailbiter reads "like a mix between Twin Peaks and Se7en." *throws moneys* I've also really high hopes for Southern Bastards from Jason Aaron. If you have neglected to check out Jonathan Hickman and Nick Pitarra's mind blowing Manhattan Projects you can pick the first two volumes #1-10 in deluxe hardcover format (you really should!)

Blackhand Comics HC
Manhattan Projects Volume 1 HC
Nailbiter Volume 1 There Will Be Blood TP
Skullkickers Volume 5 A Dozen Cousins And A Crumpled Crown TP

Bendis' brilliant All New X-Men gets the oversized HC treatment with a chance to collect #1-10 but be warned, Marvel are great at starting in this format and stopping two volumes in. There's a collection of all of Deathlok and Moon Knights early appearances as well. Please don't make me list them all, nobody else cares. I hear good things about the latest Moon Knight run which also gets its first release today. V.1's for Ghost Rider and Magneto round off a good week for Marvel and a great week for new trades over all. Rejoice!

New Trades 24/09/2014

A relatively quiet week of releases is made up for by one trade I really want today. In the last couple of weeks I have chewed my way through a tonne of books so I'm hoping to get some reviews up soon.

AVATAR PRESS

Rover Red Charlie Volume 1 TP

BOOM! STUDIOS

At 96 pages it's not the meatiest deluxe edition I've ever seen but for only £7.50 I would say it is definitely worth picking up this zombie horror from Keith Giffen and Kody Chamberlain. Collects #1-3, this highly original concept sees victims tagged with an ancient curse of death and rotting that they must either endure or pass on. I'm in!

I don't want to take the easy way out and always mention whatever Batman book is out this week by DC but the blog's about collecting and wow! This is a pretty collection. Including issues #13-17 of Snyder's Batman and replica vinyl mask. The Vertigo imprint continues it's reprinting of titles in double volumes and It's BKV again this week but this time it's Ex Machina book 3. Collecting #21-29 & Special #3

Now the book I can't wait to pick up. Revival v.4 from Tim Seeley. The first three volumes have been laying down mysteries while answering some questions at an equal rate. The book I have long described as "not just another zombie book," Collecting #18-31 & Chew/Revival #1 this volume will see the story leave rural Wisconsin for the first time as Dana closes in on her sisters murderer

Chronicles Of Hate HC
Fatale Volume 5 Curse The Demon TP
Revival Volume 4 Escape To Wisconsin TP

MARVEL COMICS

Don't spend a penny on Bendis' GotG volume 2 if you haven't picked up the reprinting of Abnett & Lanning's seminal run that was just released a few weeks back. Not that the new title is awful, the A&L stuff is just a much wiser investment. If you're a fan of Marvel's new Epic Collections then this week it is the time for one of the most famous and over told origin stories in comic book history. THe Amazing Spider-Man: Great Power EC collects ASM #1-#17, Annual #1 and as always, material from Amazing Fantasy #15 (which I already have in 50 other TPB bonus material collections.)

Amazing Spider-Man Epic Collection Volume 1 Great Power TP

New Trades out 17/09/14

AVATAR PRESS

Gravel is one of the lesser known titles from the glory days of Warren Ellis birthing books like a rabbit. Returning now under the superb penmanship of Mike Wolfer who did a great job on Avatar's Stitched, firstly on art duties for Garth Ennis and then taking over as write on volume 2. This book collects #1-4 as well as a reintroduction to the main man Bill Gravel. Hopefully this will mean an omnibus in the offing as the original series can prove difficult to complete in trades. As for the story itself? Well it had me at "SAS Combat Mage."

Something a little bit different from DC this week. Batman Unwrapped: The Court of Owls collects issues #1-11 in artists pencil form and extras of what is, in my opinion the best title from the New 52. I've already got the trade but I'll be tempted to get this just for the beauty of it.

A few Marvel Now titles finally make it to paperback this week, as always costing way too much. I mentioned a few weeks ago the infinity omnibus featuring all the Avengers tie ins so make sure you check that out before going for individual trades. The Adventures of Cyclops and Pheonix is an impressive collection that I'm surprised didn't get a release around AvX. It includes: Adventures of Cyclops and Pheonix #1-4. Askani'son #1-4. Phoenix #1-3. X-Men Book of Askani and material from Marvel Valentine Special.

Top Selling Graphic Novels August 2014

Whatever Marvel offered Jim Starlin to lure him back to Thanos paid off big time in August, plus that wee film they had out probably didn't hurt things any. Resulting in high listings for Bendis' latest run on Guardians of the Galaxy and the recent reprinting of Abnett and Lanning's seminal run. Be sure to pick this new printing up as the previous trades have been notoriously difficult to collect for years now. Deadpool, Loki and Punisher take up the rest of Marvel's positions in the top 25.

Over at DC it looks like fans are still flocking to buy the latest Fables even after 20 volumes (not including tie ins.) I'm still languishing around volume 10, must crack on. The watchmen HC is in the top ten. Never underestimate how much this book continues to make for DC. There's been no movie, comic tie in or even gossip about the franchise in months, it just carries on under its own steam for infinity. The consistent and commendable roll out of new 52 continues in a timely fashion with Batman, Flash and Constantine books all doing well.

The first volumes of Sex Criminals and Fuse, published by Image are just outside the top 25 but I doubt there's going to be any job cuts with ALL THREE volumes of Saga in the top 10. If you're on my blog I don't have to explain Saga to you. The 4th volume is scheduled for release in December and of course I'll remind you all closer to the time.

Anyway here's the list.

New Trades Out 10/09/2014

Two weeks in a row! Told you I was back. Let's take a walk down the magical road paved with trades but try not to step on any of them!

Firstly a mention for a brilliant piece of Scottish culture out today. Saltire: Annihilation part 1. Published by Diamondsteel comics it is available in bookstores throughout the UK including Waterstones and Forbidden Planet (signing in FP Edinburgh today at 5pm) and on Amazon as well. Here's the official bio of the second book from Scotland's first super hero.....

The Dark Age, a desolate time.
A power grows to the south. A power bent on destruction...on annihilation.
Not human...not spirit or shadow. Unleashed, she will bring despair.
To protect the innocent, the guardians will stand once more...
As chaos reigns before a vengeful enemy he shall rise once more...
the Immortal Guardian of a Nation.

I used to mention a new Avatar book once a month at best but nowadays they are a contender for best trade out this week, every week. With that being said Uber vol 2. Is out this week in paperback. Kieron Gillen's Uber redefined the alternate history market with his introduction of super powers to the dying days of World War II. After the devastating conflict between the English and Germans in volume 1 a new contender has approached the ring. Enter Japan! Collects #06-11.

I shouldn't have to explain C&H to anyone that's on the Internet. This web comic phenomenon is without doubt my favourite nonsense available online and it brings whole new meaning to hitting the nail on the head. While there have been previous books out I think this is the first release in a trade format and would make a great addition to your shelf. I guarantee this will be the book you pull out most when you have 5 minutes to kill. As well as collecting a tonne of comics from the site it also contains 30 exclusive strips, a choose your own adventure and an introduction from Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian.

DC have been saved from another shitty week of releases by their Vertigo imprint republishing a decade old book but damn, what a book. Perhaps Saga is the first Brian K. Vaughan comic you have read? Now is the time to go back and check out his amazing title Y. Set in a world where every man has died except our protagonist. Y features great, likable characters, drama, action and monkey shit. Unlike a lot of other ongoing Vertigo titles of the time (I'm looking at you DMZ) it really holds its quality over the whole 10 volumes. This is the reprinting of he first two volumes in one, similar to what they have just done with Preacher. Collects #01-10

All New X-Men & Uncanny Avengers would be picks from Marvel this week but certainly not at Premiere HC prices. You can pick up the complete collection of Ed Brubaker's Winter Soldier. It is an espionage thriller set after Bucky's "death" in Fear Itself. Not to be confused with, Captain America: The Complete Winter Soldier Collection. Also by Brubaker. The collection includes Fear Itself #7.1  and Winter Soldier  #1-#14

For fans of the classics, the latest Epic Collection. Fantastic Four: The World's Greatest Comic Magazine collects #1- 18 (1961)

New Trades 03/09/2014

This is my first round up of new trades out since last November so I really appreciate it if anyone bothered coming over to check it out. I promise to be more reliable from now on.

So as always I've got my pick of the books coming out today as well as a full list from all the major publishers, if anyone wants manga or magazines listed then just let me know in the comments below.

AVATAR PRESS

Up first is the great big God Is Dead Book Of Acts Deluxe Collector Box Set from Avatar which will retail at $100 but I am assured contains content far exceeding the value. There's at least half a cow in leather alone! I've not read the title since Hickman left but it's fucking insane and theyve got Alan Moore & Si Spurrier writing it *Take My Money* Oh yeah, they are limited to only 500 releases but when have you not known a Moore comic to be reprinted/packaged/branded annually, so don't go stabbing anyone over one. Included in the collection:
  • God Is Dead: The Book Of Acts 1-8 and all variant, incentive, gilded & leather covers.
  •  Exclusive to set, painted Ken Meyer cover.
  • Two 11x17 Jacen Burrows art prints.
  • Exclusive to set, Alan Moore gilded, green leather issue (no I don't now what that is either.)

Not much on offer from DC this week, nothing I've read to be honest. Forever Evil hardcover collects issues 1-7. It's by Geoff John's, yes, honestly! I also would have never guessed. NEWSARAMA calls it "cinematic." I would advise you to spend your money on something else.

I was pretty severe on DC's big event collection so it's only fair I mention that picking up this complete $50 Infinity collection is probably the only way to make sense of the fucking thing. If you're in the UK you could save a fortune and pick up the two Panini reprints instead. If you bought the Avengers tie ins separately I feel bad for you son. There's some breathtaking art, in fact this book is almost a showcase of Marvel's finest talent. The 592 pages collect:
  • Infinity 1 - 6
  • Avengers 14 - 23
  • New Avengers 7 - 12
